Our most asked FAQs when planning a program abroad
Do I need to speak the local language to study, intern or volunteer abroad?
You do not necessarily need to have any experience in the local language of your placement – whether you are studying, interning or volunteering abroad. All World Endeavors programs operate in English – with study-abroad classes offered in English, and internship and volunteer placements providing supervisors who can work in English. If you do have some language skills, share these with your placement advisor as it might expand the options you can choose from – especially in Spanish-speaking countries where we have many options where you can study or work in a Spanish environment!
What is my housing situation?
Many people are curious about the type of housing they should expect when studying, interning or volunteering abroad. The answer is that there are many different types of housing offered depending on your locations and program. These include student dorms, shared apartments, host families, cabins at research stations and occasionally even a safari tent! We can provide the details of the housing options offered for each program before you make your decision on which program to choose – so share your preferences with your advisor who can help you choose the best options for you.
Will there be other participants there at the same time as me?
We have some programs that are busy year-round with other international participants, and others that are less popular with fewer participants at different times of year. World Endeavors advisors can share with you the most and least popular locations for participants – but either way there are always local students and team members who you will study or work alongside, so you will never be alone.
Do I have to get a visa? What kind?
Visa requirements differ between locations and programs, and sometimes also depend on your nationality. For semester study abroad in many locations there is usually a student visa required for participation. Our host universities will provide you with the paperwork that is needed to apply for these visas in plenty of time – so sign up early to give you time to arrange this. For summer study, which has a shorter period, a tourist stamp (either pre-arranged on on arrival) is usually all that you need. The same is true for most of our internship and volunteer options – but your advisor will let you know in advance if a visa is needed for your choice of placement.
What kind of scholarships are offered?
While World Endeavors is committed to providing international programs that are not only culturally-immersive and life-changing, but also affordable, we also offer a number of scholarships for our programs. You can check these out, as well as links to external scholarships that you may be eligible for on the following link.
