Overview of Study Abroad Programs in South Africa

South Africa is a land of contrasts and contradictions, and choosing to study here will open your heart and broaden your worldview. This southernmost country in Africa, almost twice the size of Texas, is the 24th most populous country in the world.

As the 39th largest economy in the world, South Africa has world class universities staffed by high-ranked experts in their field. The higher education system in South Africa is one of the highest-rated on the African continent, and attracts more international students than any other African country.

Thanks to its sunny climate, South Africa has a strong outdoor culture so when you’re not in class, you will be able to soak up all the nature that is on offer. With nineteen national parks and the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Africa, South Africa has an abundance of natural beauty and diverse wildlife, from rhinos to lions and cheetahs.

With eleven official languages and diverse cultures, this ‘Rainbow Nation’ will teach you cultural intelligence. While you can pick up the basics of one of the official languages like Zulu, English is spoken by most South Africans, and is also the medium of instruction. Grow your network of fellow international students and make lifelong connections with the openhearted locals.

Ranked sixth in the world for megadiversity, South Africa offers great opportunities for hiking in its mountain ranges, snorkeling off its shores and experiencing the Big Five and other wildlife in its game parks. When you study at Stellenbosch University in the Western Cape, you can also explore the beautiful winelands of this area.

Here are just a few of the best things about studying in South Africa:

  • The weak South African rand makes it a very affordable destination for those with stronger currencies like the US dollar
  • Immersing yourself in the diverse cultures will ensure you are enriched inside and outside the classroom
  • Boost your resume and future employability with study abroad experience in this unique and challenging country
  • Grow your appreciation of global biodiversity by discovering the fascinating wildlife and natural attractions of South Africa
