Overview of Study Abroad Programs in Italy

This Mediterranean country bordered by France, Switzerland and Austria is known for its fabulous food, fashion and culture. What is less known is that Italy is a hub of educational excellence in Europe and is home to 40 universities, all of which are ranked in the QS World University Rankings. Choosing to study in Italy will give you unprecedented access to world-class learning facilities and faculty.

Considered a cultural superpower, Italy has always been a global center for art, music, literature and fashion. Immerse yourself in this centuries-old culture as you walk the ancient streets of Rome or Florence, and sip on an espresso while people-watching. Italy has the largest number of World Heritage Sites in the world so you will be surrounded by living monuments and history whenever you step out of the classroom.

Italy is a popular study abroad destination so you will have the opportunity to make friends from around the world and create lifelong memories. Lean into the cafe culture and practice your Italian on your way to class. Experience the proud food culture of this boot-shaped country as you sample a whole new vocabulary of eating, from a spuntino (a light meal) or an aperitivo (an aperitif) of snacks and drinks before dinner to a full-on four or five course dinner.

Soak up the history of this land and visit as many historical sights as you can in your spare time, from Rome’s Trevi Fountain to the Cinque Terre on the Italian Riviera. Grow your perspective as a global citizen in this beautiful country.

Here are just a few of the best things about studying in Italy:

  • Make use of Italy’s centrality and take weekend train trips to the neighboring countries of Switzerland, France and Slovenia
  • Embrace the slower, more relaxed approach to life that is Italian time
  • Grow your linguistic capabilities by learning Italian (don’t forget to use your hands!)
  • Boost your resume with this immersion into one of the oldest nations in Europe
