Overview of Study Abroad Programs in Vietnam

One of the oldest cultures in Southeast Asia, Vietnam has been influenced by Chinese, Khmer and Indian cultures, as well as French colonialism. Choosing to study here, immersed in a culture that dates back to 2000 BC, will expand your worldview and grow your confidence as a global citizen.

From the lantern-lit streets of Hoi An, a well-preserved ancient port, to savoring that first sip of pho (a Vietnamese soup dish that’s a staple), or exploring caves and tiny beaches in the breathtaking Bai Tu Long Bay, hiking in Cat Ba Island or taking a boat cruise down the Mekong Delta, Vietnam offers a rich array of activities.

Traveling around Vietnam is affordable with regular domestic flights from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, or the more leisurely train ride option, which is a great way to meet and converse with local families and avoid the traffic congestion on the main highways.

Vietnam is home to several top-ranked universities which offer excellent and affordable tuition from experts in their professions. Build your global network and make lifelong connections with fellow international and local students. Learn the basics of the language and create memorable moments with the Vietnamese people whose culture is based on the principles of humanity and harmony.

When you’re not in class, you can discover this unique and breathtakingly beautiful country. Whether you explore the 1, 864 miles of tropical coastline, or the Old Quarter of Hanoi, or venture into the largest cave in the world at Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, there are adventures and unique experiences awaiting you.

Here are just a few of the best things about studying in Vietnam:

  • Savor the street food culture and taste what’s been called ‘the best sandwich in the world’: the banh mi, which is a crusty French roll filled with pate, shredded pork, fresh greens, pickles and chillies
  • Vietnam is the world’s second-largest exporter of coffee so if you’re a coffee lover, you can soak up the coffee culture
  • Get a taste of the modern Vietnamese pop music known as V-pop as well as sampling the traditional folk music during one of the many festivals
  • Your study abroad experience here will open up your career to ample opportunities

JillianStudy in France

I realized once I got back that I learned more than I thought I did—not that I didn’t think I learned a lot, already. Three of my goals were to make more international friends (check), amp up my French comprehension (check), and expand my worldview (check).

EdenStudy in Spain

Honestly it was the best semester I’ve ever had. I met so many people and learned so many things. I found a new love for a different country. I would definitely recommend World Endeavors to anyone who wants a life-changing experience!

My advisor at World Endeavors was absolutely excellent! Her expertise and delightful people skills were exactly what sealed the deal, making World Endeavors my final decision for study abroad.”

AliciaStudy in Thailand

I have to say that what I remember, as much as the delicious colors and flavors of Thailand, are the people I crossed paths with – the other students who became such good friends, and the local Thais who showed me such kindness. And of course the food. I still dream of the food.”

HeatherStudy in England

It was amazing to be able to say I traveled to six countries in one semester.

Vietnam Study Abroad FAQs

Will I feel isolated if I study in Vietnam alone?

Most of our students travel alone to their study abroad destination – it’s perfectly normal! The overwhelming feedback we hear is how awesome it was to meet new people, gain some confidence and independence, and how it wasn’t a lonely experience at all. Many times, students have already tried a new solo experience when they enrolled in their home university and started as a freshman – so studying abroad isn’t much different. You will still have access to events, clubs, organizations and social activities that take place at the host university and student housing gives added access to a friendly community of peers.

Where will I live when I am studying in Vietnam?

You usually have a few housing options when studying abroad – home stays, apartments, or residence halls. Each has its advantages. Reach out and talk to us about what is typical for Vietnam. No matter what you pick, it’s a great way to learn more about your host culture.

How will I get to my internship or volunteer site every day?

When you arrive, you will learn how to commute back and forth to your internship or volunteer site on your own every day. Our In-Country Coordinators are great resources and will help you to determine the best way to get around. Daily transportation costs are the responsibility of the participant and are not included in program fees. Hanoi has a very cost effective public transportation system, and it is very affordable to travel to your placement site. We do our best to place participants in housing that will be convenient to their internship or volunteer site, and, in some cases, participants are able to walk to their site.
