Most interns work side-by-side with local professionals in the kitchens of fine restaurants where they assist in food preparation. Interns chop vegetables, measure ingredients, prepare salads and appetizers, and stir or strain soups, stews, and sauces. Interns also gain insight into how professional kitchens are managed in other countries.

Prior academic coursework or professional experience in the culinary arts is not required, but these experiences may help in some internship placements.
