Nestled in the Scottish lowlands, on the south coast of the Firth of Forth, Edinburgh is an ancient and cosmopolitan city surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in Europe. As the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh is home to many important sites from the country’s history, including ancient Edinburgh Castle, the Scottish Parliament, and an abundance of historic churches, burial grounds, and monuments. But this is not a city stuck in the past: today’s Edinburgh is sophisticated and lively. The annual Edinburgh International Festival, which includes events in theater, dance, opera, music, and visual arts, is one of the biggest arts events in Europe. Whether or not there’s a major event happening in town, it’s always easy to find good food, interesting shops, and fun neighborhood pubs—students who come to Edinburgh never run out of new things to see and do.
