Program Overview

The University of Cienfuegos (UCf) has made its mission to revitalize socioeconomic development by training competent professionals committed to a more equitable society. This university will challenge your worldview with its alternative, anti-imperialist stance and commitment to respond to the needs of society.

With its faculties of social sciences and humanities, engineering, economic science and agrarian science, education and sports sciences, the University of Cienfuegos focuses on the practical applications of these fields to create a just society and bridge the gap between developed and underdeveloped countries.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

With the low cost of living in Cuba, it is very affordable to immerse yourself in the way of life, sample the Cuban cuisine and explore the region when you are not in class. You will have the opportunity to make lifelong connections with your fellow international and local students, while expanding your skill base and growing your intercultural perspective.
Studying at the UCf will deepen your understanding of the history of this proud country, and enhance your ability to grapple with complex situations.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Approval received from the home university.
  • Current official undergraduate degree transcript.
  • Valid passport until at least 6 months after your program end date.  Copy of your passport (photo page).
  • Most students will be required to obtain a study visa. The application process can be extensive but World Endeavors staff will walk you through it!

Location

Known as La Perla del Sur (the Pearl of the South), Cienfuegos is a lively mix of classic French architecture and warm Caribbean style, on the largest bay in Cuba. The city’s well-preserved historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its elegant buildings, parks and plazas offer a glimpse into its colorful past.

Practice your Spanish as you wander the streets and soak up the slow pace and seaside atmosphere. Considered one of the wealthier cities in Cuba with better shopping than other Cuban towns, it is also a good place to stock up on necessities.

Housing

Please connect with one of our advisors for information on accomodation for this location.

Life in Cienfuegos

Although Cienfuegos might not have the bustling energy of Havana, its relaxed pace and friendly locals will soon captivate you. Stroll through the central square of the Parque Jose Marti and admire historic landmarks like the City Hall and the Palacio del Valle, with its Moorish architecture.

Find respite from the tropical climate at the beautiful Jagua Bay, where you can relax on the beach or take a boat trip. Pack a picnic lunch and visit the lush Jardin Botanico de Cienfuegos, or explore further afield and take a trip to the El Nicho waterfall or see flamingos in flight at Laguna Guanaro.

Support whilst in Cuba

World Endeavors study abroad programs offer full support, starting with airport pickup and accommodation transfer upon arrival followed by an on-site orientation covering health, safety, and local tips. Emergency support from your in-country coordinator, 24/7 travel medical insurance, and continuous contact with your advisor for additional assistance throughout the program helps you feel secure and supported. Whatever challenges life throws your way, we’ve got you covered!

Academic

Academic credit and transcripts are issued by the University of Cienfuegos after the successful completion of the program. The University of Cienfuegos is a fully-accredited, state-recognized institution of higher learning, whose teaching will help you develop the skills you need to succeed, with a mix of lecture-style tuition and practical experience.

The World Endeavors process is designed to take the guesswork out of academic credit and credit transfers. Our experienced advisors work with each student and his or her academic advisor before the program begins to ensure students earn the credit expected for courses taken abroad.

Eligibility

Applicants to study abroad with World Endeavors must have completed high school (or equivalent), and, in most cases, must be at least 18 years of age. While some programs have minimum GPA requirements and require that applicants be currently enrolled in a college or university, others are open to all participants regardless of age or student status. Please contact a World Endeavors advisor for more detailed eligibility criteria.

JillianStudy in France

I realized once I got back that I learned more than I thought I did—not that I didn’t think I learned a lot, already. Three of my goals were to make more international friends (check), amp up my French comprehension (check), and expand my worldview (check).

EdenStudy in Spain

Honestly it was the best semester I’ve ever had. I met so many people and learned so many things. I found a new love for a different country. I would definitely recommend World Endeavors to anyone who wants a life-changing experience!

AliciaStudy in Thailand

I have to say that what I remember, as much as the delicious colors and flavors of Thailand, are the people I crossed paths with – the other students who became such good friends, and the local Thais who showed me such kindness. And of course the food. I still dream of the food.”

HeatherStudy in England

It was amazing to be able to say I traveled to six countries in one semester.

Cuba FAQs

Where is Cuba located?

Cuba is in the Caribbean Sea, south of the U.S. state of Florida, west of the Bahamas, and north of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. To the west of Cuba lies Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. Cuba is the largest island in the Caribbean, and its capital is Havana.

What is the capital of Cuba?

The capital of Cuba is Havana.

Is Cuba safe?

Cuba was generally considered safe for tourists, with relatively low violent crime rates, especially against visitors. However, travelers should be cautious of petty thefts in tourist areas, be aware of the country’s strict governmental regulations, and understand the dual currency system to avoid scams. While internet access is limited and can be censored, standard health precautions apply, such as drinking bottled water and avoiding mosquito bites. Always check recent travel advisories and gather current insights before your journey.

What is the currency in Cuba?

Cuba has a dual currency system: the Cuban Peso (CUP) and the Cuban Convertible Peso (CUC). However, it’s important to note that the Cuban government announced plans to unify the currencies, with the CUC phasing out in favor of the CUP. Travelers planning a trip to Cuba should verify the most recent currency information and understand the current system to avoid confusion and potential financial mishaps.

What language does Cuban speak?

Cubans primarily speak Spanish. It is the official and most widely spoken language in Cuba. While there might be regional variations or slang, the Spanish spoken in Cuba is mainly intelligible to Spanish speakers from other countries. However, it has its accent and some unique vocabulary.
