London accepted an occupational therapy internship within a disability services and support organization in Sydney, Australia. Read on to learn more about her day-to-day routine!
On a typical weekday, I wake up around 7 A.M. to start getting ready for work. This is also when I can call my family and friends back home, since we are both awake during this time. I leave my apartment to walk to my bus stop by 8 A.M, which is about a 15 minute walk. During the 30 minute bus ride to my internship, I typically prep for the day, thinking of different activities I can do with the clients. Once I get off the bus, I sometimes get a coffee from a small Vietnamese bakery by my bus stop, but other times I bring an iced coffee from the grocery store.
My internship is only about a 5 minute walk from the bus stop. Then, I clock in at 9 A.M. and start doing some office work and organization. At 10 A.M, I typically start with my first client, and stay with them until around 1 P.M. when I can take my lunch break. I then work with 2-3 more clients on a normal day, where we do games, arts and crafts, chores, a variety of classes, and sometimes even excursions. If I go on an excursion with my clients, we go to a range of places from the local library to major beaches like Bondi and Manly! I normally try to leave by 5 P.M, sometimes staying until 5:30 depending on how busy we are. Then, I take the bus to the gym, and workout for about 45 minutes before walking home. The gym is about a 15 minute walk from my apartment, as well. When I get home, I’m normally starving, so I start making dinner in our shared kitchen. I share the kitchen with three other students, but everyone is typically doing their own thing by the time I get home. By 9 P.M, I shower and get ready for bed, and then wind down with a book or an episode of my TV show. I also call and text my family and friends back home at this time as well before going to sleep by 11 P.M!
On weekends, my days look a little bit different. Since I am only here for two months, I am trying to squeeze as much tourism as possible on the weekends. Friday nights, my housemate and I always do some sort of dinner together. We have really been enjoying watching the Saw movies and ordering takeaway. Sometimes, we will go out to a pub if we are feeling up to it after our long weeks of interning! On Saturdays, I like to wake up early and go grocery shopping and go to the gym for a little longer. Then, by lunch time, I am ready to meet my travel partner and take on some Sydney tourism! We typically spend the whole day together, getting home late. Sundays, I love to sleep in a little later, and enjoy a more casual day of exploring. My housemate and I like to try different brunch spots or cafes, and sometimes do a half day of something touristy, like visiting the zoo! I then do my meal prep and laundry to prepare for another week of interning!
