Program Overview

The World Endeavors Study Abroad program in Ecuador takes place at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ). It is a liberal arts, private university, the first self-financed university in Ecuador. Choose to study here and immerse yourself in the cultural and ecological diversity of this northern Andean country.

The main campus of USFQ, ranked in the top three universities in Ecuador, is in Cumbaya, a commuter town just outside of Quito and the highest income area in the country. Students benefit from a library, education and research laboratories and seven restaurants. USFQ is the only university in the world that owns a campus in the Galapagos Islands and in the Yasuni Biosphere Reserve, one of Earth’s most biodiverse areas.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Study abroad at Universidad San Francisco de Quito and experience the wonders of the cultural and ecological riches of Ecuador. Take in the tree lined avenues and green spaces of the USFQ campus and dive into the many student activities on offer, from capoeira to photography and tango.

When you study at USFQ you will benefit from learning at a highly-regarded liberal arts institution, which focuses on strengthening your communication, critical analysis and research skills with its comprehensive humanistic training. Learn from a wide network of experts as you hone your workplace skills.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Approval received from the home university.
  • Current official undergraduate degree transcript.
  • Valid passport until at least 6 months after your program end date. Copy of your passport (photo page).
  • Most students will be required to obtain a study visa. The application process can be extensive but World Endeavors staff will walk you through it!

Location

Choosing to study abroad at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito, located just outside of Quito, will give you access to all the sights and experiences that this unique and fascinating city has to offer. From its beautiful historic town square to the lively cafes and parks, there is so much to see and do here. The good cost of living makes it all accessible.

Take a free walking tour to give you an overall sense of the city and cover all the best sights in town. And of course you can’t visit Ecuador without visiting the site of the equator itself (which is what the city is named for). Outdoor enthusiasts can also use Quito as a gateway to exploring Ecuador’s lush and diverse cloud forest.

Housing

USFQ matches international students with carefully screened host families in Quito and Cumbayá. Host families provide students with their own bedroom (bathroom may be shared), Wifi internet access, and two meals per day (breakfast and dinner). Host families generally live within a 15-45 minute commute by public transportation from the USFQ campus. For those who prefer independent living, students can find accommodation on their own, with the help of recommendations from USFQ.

Life in Quito

Quito, the capital of Ecuador, is one of the most scenic cities in the Americas. It lies in the valley of the Guayllabamba River, and is flanked by snow-capped volcanoes. Quito’s beautifully preserved historic center is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.

Explore this vibrant city and browse bustling markets like the Otavalo Market, filled with traditional crafts and artisanal food. Wander around Carolina Park, the heart of the city where families gather to relax and play soccer. Or take the TeleferiQo skyrail to the top of the dormant Pichincha volcano and soak up the views from the top.
