Program Overview

The University of the South Pacific (USP) is a single university with campuses in all of its twelve member countries in the Pacific region. USP is a well-known international center for teaching and research on Pacific culture and environment and is the ideal choice for students looking to gain an understanding of both the unity and the diversity of Pacific island cultures.

USP prides itself on being the only university in the world that teaches with a Pacific Islands context, and that promotes the work of Pacific Island scholars, many of whom are part of the faculty. Although the core academic subjects are similar to those in other universities, the courses also draw on regional data, source materials and case studies to enrich students’ knowledge.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Studying at the USP, which prides itself on being one of the top-ranked higher learning institutions in the region, gives students unprecedented opportunities for personal and professional growth.

The USP International Support Services offers constant support and an Orientation program to help international students find their bearings and make new connections. There are regular sports days and community outreach opportunities, which help students build their networks and confidence.

Location

Suva, the capital of Fiji, is a harbor city built on a peninsula. It is the commercial and political center of Fiji and the largest urban area in the South Pacific outside of Australia and New Zealand. Home to half of Fiji’s urban population, it is sometimes referred to as the ‘New York of the Pacific’, as Suva’s inhabitants represent all the major indigenous Pacific groups. This diversity offers a rich opportunity to expand your cultural knowledge.

Suva, the site of the USP main campus, also has a thriving arts and performance scene, so when you’re not in class, take advantage of the mild climate and relaxed way of life and immerse yourself in Fijian culture.

Housing

The University offers on-campus halls of residence, newly built and with a kitchen on each floor. There are also flats available on campus, offering single beds with shared facilities, air conditioning and security. Or you can opt to share in the day-to-day life of a host family with a nearby homestay option.

Life in Suva

This capital city will enchant you with its broad avenues, lush parks and grand historical buildings, like the Suva City Library. Stroll through the picturesque Thurston Gardens to visit the Fiji Museum, home to a collection of South Pacific artifacts like traditional canoes and war clubs, some dating back 3,700 years.

Shop for fresh fruit, vegetables and fish at the colorful Municipal Market then cool off in Suva’s rainforest backyard, the Colo-i-Suva Forest Park, an oasis filled with pools, streams and walking trails. Savor the Indo-Fijian flavors and sample the many delicious curries on offer.

Support while in Suva

World Endeavors study abroad programs offer full support, starting with airport pickup and accommodation transfer upon arrival followed by an on-site orientation covering health, safety, and local tips. Emergency support from your in-country coordinator, 24/7 travel medical insurance, and continuous contact with your advisor for additional assistance throughout the program helps you feel secure and supported. Whatever challenges life throws your way, we’ve got you covered!

Academic

Academic credit and transcripts are issued by the University of the South Pacific after the successful completion of the program. The University of the South Pacific is a fully-accredited, state-recognized institution of higher learning, whose teaching will help you develop the skills you need to succeed, with a mix of lecture-style tuition and practical experience.

The World Endeavors process is designed to take the guesswork out of academic credit and credit transfers. Our experienced advisors work with each student and his or her academic advisor before the program begins to ensure students earn the credit expected for courses taken abroad.

Eligibility

Applicants to study abroad with World Endeavors must have completed high school (or equivalent), and, in most cases, must be at least 18 years of age. While some programs have minimum GPA requirements and require that applicants be currently enrolled in a college or university, others are open to all participants regardless of age or student status. Please contact a World Endeavors advisor for more detailed eligibility criteria.

Courses at the University of the South Pacific are lecture and seminar-based, with significant independent study expected. We recommend students take only four courses per semester. Students may take five courses per semester with approval from their Academic or Study Abroad Advisor first.

I have to say that what I remember, as much as the delicious colors and flavors of Thailand, are the people I crossed paths with – the other students who became such good friends, and the local Thais who showed me such kindness. And of course the food. I still dream of the food.”
