Situated on the Central East coast of China, sits Shanghai, China’s most advanced and populous city. With a moderate climate, breathtaking cityscapes, booming international business, and plenty of exploration opportunities, Shanghai offers a perfect introduction into modern China’s way of life. While studying at Shanghai University you’ll be able to learn or improve your Mandarin skills while earning essential credits towards your degree!

Location

Situated on the Central East coast of China, sits Shanghai, China’s most advanced and populous city. With a moderate climate, breathtaking cityscapes, booming international business, and plenty of exploration opportunities, Shanghai offers a perfect introduction into modern China’s way of life. Shanghai University is located in the heart of the city, in a suburban neighborhood with plenty of culinary, cultural, and natural attractions nearby. Among the futuristic sky-scrapers, historical temples, and art deco architecture, you’ll feel as though you’re living in a fantastical neo-noir movie set.

Housing

There are dormitory buildings exclusively for international students. All rooms are well furnished and equipped with TV, air-conditioner, internet. Each room will either be a single or double with one or two single beds, a desk, closet, air-conditioner and bathroom with a basin, western toilet and shower. On each floor of the buildings there is a shared kitchen and a laundry area with washing machines. The Residence Hall provides housing to students from all over the world. A variety of cafeterias provide delicious food, and supermarkets, convenience stores and open markets can be easily reached. Our staff member at each building provides 24-hour services for security and consultation. The laundry service is available at the laundry room.

Life in Shanghai

While studying at Shanghai University you’ll be able to learn or improve your Mandarin skills while earning essential credits towards your degree. You will find a great mix of local and international students at the University who you can expand your global network with!

The city of Shanghai offers a little bit of everything that a major global destination is typically attributed with. Transportation is robust throughout all of Shanghai with bus lines and high-speed trains so you can easily explore the full scope of the city’s historical and cultural landscape.

Academic

Academic credit and transcripts are issued by Shanghai University after the successful completion of your courses.

The World Endeavors process is designed to take the guesswork out of academic credit and credit transfers. Our experienced advisors work with each student and his or her academic advisor before the program begins to ensure students earn the credit expected for courses taken abroad.

Eligibility

Applicants to study abroad with World Endeavors must have completed high school (or equivalent), and, in most cases, must be at least 18 years of age. While some programs have minimum GPA requirements and require that applicants be currently enrolled in a college or university, others are open to all participants regardless of age or student status. Please contact a World Endeavors advisor for more detailed eligibility criteria.

Course Load

Students will be able to choose from 4-6 courses taught in English across a variety of fields in language, marketing, finance, economics, foreign relations, and more! A course will be arranged if a minimum of 10 students enroll. This applies to all courses.

Here are some activities you might consider for your spare time in China:

  • Visit the Great Wall: Whether you choose the restored sections like Badaling or wilder parts like Jiankou, the Great Wall is a must-see.
  • Taste Local Cuisine: From Peking duck in Beijing to dim sum in Hong Kong, hot pot in Chongqing, and dumplings in Shanghai, the food is diverse and delicious.
  • Go to Temples & Monasteries: Visit sacred sites like the Lama Temple in Beijing or the Hanging Monastery in Datong.

What is the currency in China?

The official currency of China is the Renminbi (RMB), often referred to as the Yuan. Its symbol is “¥” and its ISO code is “CNY”. The word “Renminbi” translates to “People’s Currency,” while “Yuan” is the unit of the currency, similar to “dollar” or “euro” in English. When doing business or discussing prices, people in China commonly use the term “Yuan.”

What kind of government does China have?

China is a one-party socialist republic led by the Communist Party of China (CPC). While there are other parties, they operate under the CPC’s leadership. The President is the head of state, and the Premier is the head of government, but major decisions are typically made by the Politburo Standing Committee, a top body within the CPC.
