ABOUT COACHING AND SPORTS MANAGEMENT INTERNSHIPS ABROAD

Sports are a vital part of culture all around the world, and working in athletics is one of the most exciting ways to experience a new culture. Working abroad in this field gives interns the chance to learn about how the challenges of coaching and managing an athletic team are approached in different places. Depending on the placement, interns may do some work with marketing and promotion of the team, event planning and coordination, and managing the facilities and business of an athletic organization. Interns interested in coaching may also work with team coaches to train athletes or may be responsible for providing administrative support.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: COACHING AND SPORTS MANAGEMENT ABROAD

Because coaching and sports management is such a specialized field, it’s particularly valuable to get hands-on experience in an athletic organization. Going abroad gives interns the chance to observe different management techniques and to be part of the sporting culture in a new destination. An international internship experience is also a powerful résumé addition, demonstrating that the intern is motivated, adaptable, and able to hit the ground running in an unfamiliar situation—all crucial traits in this competitive field.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

While no specific professional background is required to intern in this field, it’s crucial that interns be self-motivated and adaptable with a strong interest in working in coaching and sports management.  Successful interns will also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work with people from different cultures and backgrounds. Good organizational skills are also important.
