Overview

The World Endeavors summer program in Valladolid is more than a Spanish language course; it’s a seminar in living a Spanish life. From home stays with local families to cultural activities to a picturesque, charming location in the city center, this program presents the ideal chance to learn about and live the Spanish lifestyle. Students have countless opportunities to make friendships that cross cultural boundaries and last a lifetime. It’s the perfect setting to gain appreciation and understanding for the Spanish culture and to fall in love with a city students will never want to leave.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
The University of Valladolid offers high-quality instruction and cultural immersion for students at all levels of Spanish. Because it is a popular destination for language learners, students at the University have the opportunity to connect with classmates from around the world. And they do so while living with host families in a city that remains strongly and undeniably Spanish.

Location

The Castilla y Leon region could easily be mistaken for a fairy-tale kingdom. It’s home to some of Spain’s most historic and picturesque castles, cathedrals, and villages. The capital of this region is Valladolid, a magnificent city founded in the Middle Ages that lives very much in the present. Local traditions are strong here, including a magnificent Holy Week procession, and devotees of Spanish literature make pilgrimages to Miguel de Cervantes’ house in town. The local culture has a fun side, too; there’s a regular tapas competition held between local bars, and a major international film festival takes place in Valladolid every autumn. It’s the perfect place to experience Spanish culture first-hand.

Academics

This summer session is an intensive language seminar, perfect for students who wish to learn a great deal of Spanish in a short amount of time. Classes are held for 20 hours each week and cover grammar, conversation, culture, and comprehension. All levels of Spanish students can participate, from beginners to advanced speakers, and they will be placed in the course that is right for them.

In the afternoons, activities are organized for participants to learn more about Valladolid and the Castilla y Leon region. These activities may include screenings of Spanish films, trips to local art museums, Spanish music listening sessions, and guided architectural walks.

The course also includes three Saturday excursions to places of interest around Spain. These excursions, guided by members of the Art History faculty, take students to internationally recognized locations. The destinations change from year to year, but in the past the destinations have included: Salamanca, Ruta de los Castillos, Segovia, and Avila. These excursions are a great way for students to practice their Spanish and learn more about the area, while spending time with friends from the program.

The World Endeavors process is designed to take the guesswork out of academic credit and credit transfers. Our experienced advisors work with each student and his or her academic advisor before the program begins to ensure students earn the credit expected for courses taken abroad.

Housing

Participants in this program stay with local Spanish host families. Staying with families is a valuable part of becoming immersed in the local culture, and it’s one of the best ways for students to practice their Spanish outside the classroom. Host families are welcoming and enjoy having foreign students stay with them. All host family accommodation includes three meals every day plus laundry.
