Students participating in the three-week summer study program at Heriot-Watt will be based at the university’s Scottish Borders campus in Galashiels. The Scottish Borders, the heart of the world-famous Scottish textile industry and only a short hour’s drive away from Edinburgh, are renowned for unique practices in textiles and the manufacture of luxury fabrics. World Endeavors offers two available programs, each focused on providing insight into the history and practices of Scottish textiles. Programs include visits to local textile mills as well as excursions throughout Galashiels and Edinburgh.

Heriot-Watt is a perfect fit for students interested in gaining real-life, hands-on experience in their field of study while living in an exciting, world-class city. The university offers a wide range of available academic fields as well as a variety of on-campus clubs and activities. Visiting students have the opportunity to experience the university’s world-renowned teaching facilities during their time on campus, including the longest screen printing table in Europe at the School of Textiles & Design.

Nestled in the Scottish lowlands on the south coast of the Firth of Forth, Edinburgh is an ancient and cosmopolitan city surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in Europe. As the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh is home to many important sites from the country’s history, including ancient Edinburgh Castle, the Scottish Parliament, and an abundance of historic churches, burial grounds, and monuments. But this is not a city stuck in the past; today’s Edinburgh is sophisticated and lively. The annual Edinburgh International Festival, which includes events in theater, dance, opera, music, and visual arts, is one of the biggest arts events in Europe. Whether or not there’s a major event happening in town, it’s always easy to find good food, interesting shops, and fun neighborhood pubs, and students who come to Edinburgh never run out of new things to see and do.

More Stories

“While I didn’t stay in Scotland long, I immediately felt at home there, and definitely struggled with leaving. The rugged beauty of the land is invigorating and peaceful at once; the people are incredibly welcoming and love to share stories of their day to day lives, as well as their history. I found in Scotland a happiness I didn’t know existed, and yearn to return every day.”
