Students participating in the three-week summer study program at Heriot-Watt will be based at the university’s Scottish Borders campus in Galashiels. The Scottish Borders, the heart of the world-famous Scottish textile industry and only a short hour’s drive away from Edinburgh, are renowned for unique practices in textiles and the manufacture of luxury fabrics. World Endeavors offers a summer program focused on providing insight into the history and practices of Scottish textiles. Programs include visits to local textile mills as well as excursions throughout Galashiels and the United Kingdom.

The summer program at Heriot-Watt is a perfect fit for students interested in gaining real-life, hands-on experience in the textile and design field. Visiting students have the opportunity to experience the university’s world-renowned teaching facilities during their time on campus, including the longest screen printing table in Europe at the School of Textiles & Design.

Nestled in the Scottish countryside, Heriot-Watt’s Scottish Borders campus is located in the heart of Scotland’s luxury textile industry. Galashiels is known for textile production, making it the perfect home to the School of Textiles and Design. Being a short train ride from Edinburgh, students can experience the best of the vibrant city life and quiet countryside.

More Stories

“While I didn’t stay in Scotland long, I immediately felt at home there, and definitely struggled with leaving. The rugged beauty of the land is invigorating and peaceful at once; the people are incredibly welcoming and love to share stories of their day to day lives, as well as their history. I found in Scotland a happiness I didn’t know existed, and yearn to return every day.”

Students specialize in either Knit, Print or Weave, but have the option to attend taster sessions in other workshops to learn more about the other fields.

During the first two weeks, Students are integrated with local Scottish students working with and learning from experienced academics and technicians. This takes place in workshops as well as at local textile mills which manufacture international brands including Louis Vuitton and Vivienne Westwood.

The last weeks takes place in London, where students get to visit design exhibitions and designers. The program changes from year to year, but in 2017 students visited a Balenciaga exhibition at the Victoria & Albert museum, and other significant sites including the Fashion and Textiles Museum and Liberty London, the home of British creative, design and print.

The World Endeavors process is designed to take the guesswork out of academic credit and credit transfers. Our experienced advisors work with each student and his or her academic advisor before the program begins to ensure students earn the credit expected for courses taken abroad.

Students participating in the summer program will live and study at the recently refurbished Scottish Borders Campus. Single bedrooms are provided and include a private bathroom. Accommodations are centrally-located on campus and include wireless internet access.
