The World Endeavors Study in Spain – University of Valladolid program is located in the city of Valladolid. Valladolid is off the beaten path for tourists, but it is right at the center of Spain’s educational heritage. The University of Valladolid is one of country’s oldest institutions of higher education with roots in the thirteenth century. Since then, the university has grown to include more than seventy degree courses, a student body of nearly 30,000, and four campuses in different cities with Valladolid remaining the flagship campus. Classes for Spanish language learners have been offered on campus since the 1940s. The Language Center is now a premier destination for students wanting to learn the language while living in the heart of the Castilla y Leon region. The University attracts many international students each year and offers language instruction at all levels in small classes with dedicated instructors. Coming to Valladolid is a fantastic opportunity to witness the rich traditions of a historic university and experience the Spanish way of life.
The World Endeavors Study in Spain – University of Valladolid program offers students at all levels of Spanish high-quality instruction and a culturally-immersive experience. Because it is a popular destination for language learners, students at the University have the opportunity to connect with classmates from around the world. And they do so while living with host families in a city that remains strongly and undeniably Spanish.
The Castilla y Leon region could easily be mistaken for a fairy-tale kingdom. It’s home to some of Spain’s most historic and picturesque castles, cathedrals, and villages. The capital of this region is Valladolid, a magnificent city founded in the Middle Ages that lives very much in the present. Local traditions are strong here, including a magnificent Holy Week procession, and devotees of Spanish literature make pilgrimages to Miguel de Cervantes’ house in town. The local culture has a fun side, too: there’s a regular tapas competition held between local bars, and a major international film festival takes place in Valladolid every autumn. It’s the perfect place to experience Spanish culture firsthand.
“Honestly it was the best semester I’ve ever had. I met so many people and learned so many things. I created a new interest in this culture that I knew nothing about. I found a new love for a different country.”
- Eden, Study in Spain

TYPICAL COURSE LOAD
TYPICAL COURSE LOAD
The World Endeavors program in Valladolid consists of two parts: a semester of Spanish Studies offered in the fall and a semester of Language and Culture offered in the spring. Students may enroll in both if they wish to complete a full academic year in Valladolid. Students will take a placement test upon arrival in order to be placed in courses at the appropriate language level. Previous knowledge of the Spanish language is not required.
In addition to coursework, students can supplement their learning by taking part in optional socio-cultural activities and by going on trips organized by the program. In the past these have included workshops featuring everything from Spanish cinema to Flamenco dancing and day trips to Madrid, Segovia, Salamanca and other cities.
This course is designed for students who wish to improve their Spanish and gain an understanding of the culture of Spanish society. The language lessons are participative and are aimed at putting grammar into practice, extending vocabulary, and developing oral and written skills. Lessons in culture afford students the opportunity to get to know and understand the way of life, customs and traditions of Spanish society and, in general, what the country is like.
This course is designed for students who wish to improve their Spanish and gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of Spanish history and culture. In order to be able to enroll, students must have a minimum command of the language (minimum, A2 successfully completed). Subjects include Spanish Literature, History, Art History and Geography.
