The World Endeavors Study in France program takes place at the Université Catholique de l’Ouest in Angers, France. Founded in the 11th century, the Université Catholique de l’Ouest is one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher education in France. With its historic roots and commitment to academic excellence, the Université Catholique de l’Ouest is perfect for students wishing to experience the French educational system while earning credit toward their degree. Professors at the Université are experts in their fields and dedicated to enriching the lives of their students. The campus is home to ten institutes dedicated to various academic fields of study, and extracurricular activities and student societies abound, including theater, student newspapers, concerts, sporting activities, and weekly cross-cultural exchanges with French students. The school’s location in the scenic Loire Valley is perfect for learning about French culture and using the language in everyday life.
The Université Catholique de l’Ouest is the perfect setting for students from a variety of academic backgrounds to immerse themselves in the French language and culture. The small city of Angers offers students daily opportunities to speak French while studying under respected scholars and researchers.
Angers is a historic city with a thoroughly modern perspective located in the world-famous Loire River Valley. The city is home to a beautiful cathedral and the Château d’Angers, a castle dating back to the ninth century. The other châteaux of the Loire Valley are nearby, making Angers the ideal home base for exploring the dramatic history of France. A variety of concerts, theater performances, and festivals occur in town, and the city has public basketball, volleyball, and tennis facilities. An assortment of museums showcase several centuries’ worth of local art. The city is small enough that students find it easy to get around on foot, and it’s large enough that students can easily find all their necessities.
Jillian is from Chicago and studied Global Studies and Biblical & Theological Studies in college. She studied abroad in Angers, France with World Endeavors.
“As my first experience in a foreign country, I had no idea of what to expect during my time in France. While there, I was able to apply what I had learned in school to a real-life setting. While it was a bit intimidating at first, I enjoyed being able to experience an entirely new world which taught me to love art museums, eat an obscene number of baguettes without regret, and to step solidly outside of my comfort zone and enjoy it.”
- Nyssa, Program Advisor
After successful completion of the program, academic credit and transcripts will be issued by the Université Catholique de l’Ouest, which is accredited by the French ministry of higher education.
The World Endeavors process is designed to take the guesswork out of academic credit and credit transfers. Our experienced advisors work with each student and his or her academic advisor before the program begins to ensure students earn the credit expected for courses taken abroad.
• Applicants should have a GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
• English proficiency is required; no experience with French is required.
• An exam at the beginning of each term is used to evaluate the language skill of each student to determine the appropriate level of language courses.
TYPICAL COURSE LOAD
Students may choose from a variety of courses for up to 15 credit hours per semester.
The summer program is an intensive language, grammar, and comprehension course. There are two month-long summer sessions in July and August. Students may choose to attend one or both sessions. No prior experience with the French language is required.
After a placement test to determine language level, students begin language courses. These focus on written and oral French (both comprehension and speaking) as well as understanding the language, including phonetics, grammar and vocabulary. The courses are supplemented with work in small groups for speaking practice and independent work with personalized tutoring.
In addition to classroom study, cultural activities and excursions will play an important part in summer courses.
Students stay with local French families, a fantastic opportunity to be immersed in the local culture and use French in everyday life. All accommodations are within walking distance of campus or of public transportation. Meals are not included in the program fee, but students can take advantage of the on-campus dining hall which offers meals for about 3.00 Euros.
