Program Overview

Thailand is home to some of the most diverse wildlife ecosystems. As a Pre-veterinary Intern, you’ll get the chance to shadow professionals that work with animals both large and small. This one-of-a-kind placement takes place in two phases. For the first segment, you’ll start Phetchaburi province and join the team at an esteemed wildlife hospital. For the second segment, you’ll move to Bangkok and intern with an animal hospital mainly serving domestic pets. By the end, interns will walk away knowing more about what it takes to support animals with different environmental and biological needs.

How It Works

Phase 1:

You’ll begin your Pre-veterinary Internship in Phetchaburi province, about 100 miles northeast of Bangkok. There, you’ll join the team of a non-profit wildlife hospital dedicated to rehabilitating animals affected by exploitation and illegal pet trading. The rescue takes in animals ranging from dogs and cats to elephants. As part of the group, your tasks might range from patient admission to administering medications and assisting with surgeries.

Phase 2:

After a few weeks, you’ll transition to Bangkok begin working with an animal hospital in the heart of the capital city. This hospital provides general veterinary care, including diagnostics and treatments, mostly to household pets. At this site, you will shadow licensed veterinarians working across various specialties, and you may act as a veterinary nurse assistant on some patient cases.

The amount of time you spend at each phase depends on your overall program length. Generally speaking, we do our best to split your time evenly between the two internship sites.

The country’s diverse landscape and vibrant culture make it an excellent option for travelers looking to explore without spending too much.

What Should You Bring to Thailand?

It’s important to bring appropriate clothing for the climate; lightweight, breathable fabrics are best. Additionally, a hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent are essential for protection from the sun and bugs.

Is Thailand Safe to Travel to?

Thailand is generally considered safe for travel. However, travelers should know health advisories, follow good hygiene practices, and use mosquito repellent. Respecting local customs and laws is also essential, and precautions against scams and petty theft are advised in tourist areas. Staying informed about travel advisories and seeking reliable information from recent travelers can ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.

What industries or fields are most popular for internships in Thailand?

Thailand offers a diverse range of internship opportunities across various sectors. Popular fields include agricultural sciences, where interns engage in sustainable farming practices; occupational therapy, providing hands-on experience in clinical settings; and human resources, involving tasks like recruitment and employee relations. When should I apply for internships in Thailand?

It’s advisable to apply for internships in Thailand at least 16 weeks before your intended start date. This timeframe allows for necessary visa processing, placement coordination, and travel arrangements. Applications are accepted up to a year in advance, and early submission is encouraged due to limited placement availability. While last-minute placements may be possible in some cases, applying early increases the likelihood of securing your desired internship.

Will I get paid as an intern in Thailand?

Internships in Thailand through World Endeavors are unpaid. Paid placements are uncommon abroad due to strict visa regulations and the administrative burden on host organizations. Instead of financial compensation, these internships offer valuable hands-on experience, professional growth, and full support before, during, and after the program.

Can I get an internship in Thailand if I don't speak Thai?

Yes, you can get an internship in Thailand if you don’t speak Thai. Most residents of Thailand use Thai in their everyday lives, and knowing the language may offer more opportunities for your internship placement. However, interns placed through World Endeavors only need to speak English in order to participate in one of our programs. Internship programs in Thailand lasting at least four weeks include six hours of Thai language classes in order to get you acquainted with the basics!
