Caitlin: Host Family Life
Living with a host family is a great option for any traveler. Host families provide you with many resources and experiences you wouldn’t get living on your own, especially when traveling to a foreign location. At first, I was hesitant to be living with a host family as I would be thrown into their world without knowing anything about them. After being with a host family for a week, I can already say I am grateful that I have this experience.
I live with a mother and her 18-year-old daughter in a 3-bedroom apartment near the beach in the southern suburb of Sydney. My host, Donna, and her daughter, Tayla, have been very welcoming. To them, being a host is more than just giving me a place to live. One of the first things Donna said to me after I arrived was that we are family now, as she gave me a hug. I truly do feel like a part of their family already; we talk about our days, watch TV together, eat meals together, and help each other out. I get to experience Australian culture while also feeling comfortable in a home environment, which makes being away from my own home a little easier.
To anyone who is questioning whether staying with a host family is right for them, I say do it. It’s an experience you won’t regret.
