Caitlin- Nothing is Ever Gained Without Personal Sacrifice
One of the best pieces of advice I have received from one of my friends is “Nothing is ever gained without personal sacrifice. Remember that.” This really hit home, and I definitely will never forget it. While the advice had nothing to do with travel at the time, I think it can be easily related to the subject.
Over the past few years, I have developed a great deal of wanderlust. I desire to travel the world. I always say that if travel was free, you would never see me again. The only problem is that travel isn’t free. This is probably one of the leading factors why so many people do not travel, at least, that’s what they say. So how do you make it work? That is where the personal sacrifice comes in.
But first, you may be thinking, “What is there to gain from travel?” I can tell you there is a lot. The best lessons I learned have come from my travels. Travel isn’t just seeing the most famous landmarks and taking pictures to show your friends. Travel is about having new experiences that will change you and shape you, opening your eyes to things you never thought were out there. I can guarantee that travel will fulfill your life in ways that other material things cannot. In the world we live in, it is hard to give things up and make sacrifices. We think that if we give something up, we will only experience loss, and no gain. However, you don’t have to make huge sacrifices to be able to make it work; skip the movie theater one night and have a movie night at home, skip the Starbucks one week, resist that really cute shirt from Target. Making these small sacrifices will set you on the path towards earning a trip of a lifetime.
One of my favorite quotes is “travel is the only thing you can buy that makes you richer.” I made sacrifices to be able to come to Australia, but it was worth it because I am living my dream here. I may not be richer in a monetary sense, but I have gained more than what money could ever buy, and I will never regret making any sacrifices for a life filled with adventures.
