Caitlin: a day in the life

Adjusting to life in Sydney has certainly been a challenge. In 30 hours, I flew to the other side of the world on 3 different flights, encountered 4 different time zones, and arrived in an unfamiliar area that I would be calling home for 3 months. Creating a routine right from the start is important to be able to adjust as quickly as possible and regain the sense of normalcy that you would have back home. Here is a look into my daily routine as a new intern in Sydney:

5:45 am: Wake up and get ready for the day. The commute on public transportation in Sydney is quite long due to Sydney being a huge, spread out city. It is important to be aware of the bus timetables so you know what time you have to leave to be able to make it to work on time.

6:45 am: Leave for work. I have about a 5-minute walk to my first bus stop in the morning. From my homestay, it takes about 1 hour to get to work on 2 different buses. The bus system can be tricky to figure out at first, but bus drivers are very helpful in letting you know when it is your turn to get off, so don’t be afraid to ask anyone for help!

8:00 am: Arrive at work. I am scheduled to be at work at 8:30, so I have an extra half hour after I get off the bus to explore the area and find a coffee shop to sit and relax before I start my day.

8:30 am: My day begins at my internship. I spend the day working in the adult day program at Creativity Inc, helping adults with disabilities participate in various activities within the center and in the community.

3:00 pm: My day ends at my internship. I have about an hour commute home on 3 different buses.

Evening/Nighttime: When I get home from my internship, I prepare my lunch and clothes for the next day so everything is ready. I will catch up on social media that I’ve missed at home because of the time difference and just relax. At the beginning stages of my stay in Sydney I have been very tired due to the jetlag, so I have spent my evenings just relaxing and resting up.

Weekends: I am looking forward to my first weekend in Sydney. I plan to use weekends to explore the city and surrounding areas of Australia. There is so much to do in and around the city, so take advantage of the days you have off to see all that you can!
