Caitlin- Everything Can Kill You
Before coming to Australia, whenever I would talk to people about the trip they would say the same thing: “Don’t you know that everything can kill you in Australia?” I would always just laugh it off. Yes, it is true that many things in Australia can kill you; it is home to the deadliest creatures in the world. But I wasn’t going to let that stop me from coming to the country I dreamed about living in. There are a lot of other things that can kill you besides nature, and I was not about to let me fall victim to these other deadly things:
Monotony
One of my favorite travel quotes is “adventure may hurt you, but monotony will kill you.” I remember this quote whenever someone tells me that traveling by myself isn’t smart or that they would never travel like me. I don’t want to live a sedentary life where I have a set routine each day that never changes. I want adventure. Yes, it has its challenges, but each one gives a story to tell and has also made me stronger and a more confident traveler and person. I won’t let monotony kill me.
Self-Doubt: Believe You Can
I used to have a lot of self-doubt. I still do in some aspects of my life, but not when it comes to travel. The experiences I have had while traveling have forced me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to do things I never thought I could. If you told me five years ago that I would be living across the world by myself, I would have told you that you were crazy. My experiences traveling over the past 5 years have led me to do just that and have opened my eyes to my one true passion of travel. I never stop believing in myself when I am traveling.
Fear of Failure: Do It Anyway
Failure is something I was always afraid of growing up. I kept to myself all throughout my schooling because I didn’t want others to know if I have failed. I wanted to be perfect, but that is impossible, especially when it comes to travel. Things don’t always go as planned, and there’s nothing that can be done about it except to move on and try again another day. When I traveled internationally for the first time, I didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t know if I would love it or hate it, regret it or want more. But I went because I wasn’t going to let the fear stop me from living my dream. Fear happens, failure happens. But don’t let it stop you from living your life.
Excuses: Think of Reasons You Can
It’s easy to make up excuses to why we can’t do something difficult rather than just trying it. We tend to take the easy way out. But if you live your life this way, there will never be any excitement or adventure. Before I travelled internationally for the first time, I would come up with a million reasons as to why I can’t do it. When I started thinking of the reasons I can instead, it was a whole new experience for me. I opened doors to a whole new life that I love. Don’t limit yourself for any reason.
