India is a country full of beauty, color, and surprises, and Jaipur may just be one of this nation’s greatest gems. Located in the Rajasthan province in the Northwest, this fantastic location is the setting of World Endeavors’ internship and volunteer programs in India, and we promise it is for good reason. Jaipur was the first planned city in India, and is full of life and history as one of the country’s biggest tourist attractions. In addition to being a fantastic place to gain incredible hands-on experience in your field, Jaipur is also a prime spot to explore and immerse yourself in Indian culture. We’ve put together a list of the top destinations in Jaipur, and we can’t wait to hear about your adventures!

Hawa Mahal

Translating to the “Palace of Wind,” this iconic structure in Jaipur made of pink sandstone is sure to make it into a few of your favorite snapshots. Built in 1799, the Hawa Mahal reflects the royal history of the city as its original use was as a observation tower for the city’s elite. Parades and festivals take place below, and royalty would watch from this building’s stunning viewpoints and over 950 windows.

Amer Fort

As one of the most-visited tourist destinations in the area, this large for situated just outside of Jaipur does not disappoint. Here you can experience unique Hindu architectural styles, and wander the interior of the fort with its many mirrors and other fascinating embellishments. Take a tour of the area or wander it by yourself, but either way this is a sight not to be missed.

The Pink City

Formally known as the Old City, this part of Jaipur is sure to brighten your day with its vibrant colors and unique architecture. This area features many different palaces and royal buildings, planned out before Jaipur was built and later all painted pink! In India, the bright color represents hospitality, and the city was painted as such to welcome the Prince of Wales in 1876. Talk about a warm welcome!

Jantar Mantar Observatory

This is not just any observatory—in fact, it is one of the largest in the world! It also once housed the largest sundial in the world, and it’s many unique devices and measurement tools still attract astronomers and astrophysicists from all over. It is also one of Jaipur’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and is a popular attraction for those who prefer to appreciate outer space from a distance.

The Bazaar

Get lost in the overwhelming sights, sounds, and experiences in Jaipur’s central bazaar. Explore the many different facets of this incredible market—the flowers, spices, street foods, textiles, and so much more. This is a fantastic location to interact with locals and practice your Hindi skills.

While these are only a few of the amazing experiences to be had in Jaipur, the rest are up to you to explore! Feel free to send us photos and stories, we love to keep up with our participants and watch their journeys.
