Argentina is a massive country, and it would be nearly impossible to experience completely in only a few months—or even a few years. It is especially home to some of the most incredible sights that nature has to offer in South America, as well as some unforgettable cultural experiences that can be found outside the city.
Because it is such a big country and travel time can be daunting, we recommend that you choose one or two of these amazing Argentine experiences to enjoy during your time there on long weekends—but don’t worry, we guarantee you’ll return someday to check the rest of them off of your bucket list.
1. Iguazú Falls
Have you ever stood at the border of three countries and stared down into a thundering waterfall? If not, you’ve probably never visited Iguazú Falls. This major attraction in the North of Argentina also borders Brazil and Paraguay, and the sheer size of this completely natural wonder is sure to take your breath away. Take a boat tour, explore the lookouts, and enjoy some of the wildlife in the area, but be sure to bring a poncho—you’re going to get wet!
2. Estancias
One of the staples of Argentine culture (other than the Tango) are estancias, or ranches. Historically and to this day, Argentina is a major agricultural country, and many of its exports are beef originating from the vast farmland that reaches hundreds of miles throughout the heart of the country. These estancias were famously run by gauchos, or Argentine cowboys, and you can still receive the classic gaucho experience if you stay at one of these lovely ranches for a weekend not far from Buenos Aires.
3. Perito Moreno Glacier
If you are able to make your way down to the Patagonia region of Argentina, there are a few incredible sites that you can’t miss, the most important being Perito Moreno Glacier. This massive ice field will be larger than you could have ever imagined, and you will be able to spend the afternoon wandering the walkways and taking in its vastness. Every so often, you can hear pieces of the glacier break off and thunder down into the lake below, a sound that is so exhilerating that you will never be able to forget it.
4. Mt. Fitz Roy
Another iconic sight in the Patagonia region is Mt. Fitz Roy, a famous mountain that just happens to be featured on the logo of a famous outdoor outfitting brand! Found in Argentina’s Glacier National Park and challenging hike from El Chaltén, you will find yourself in awe of its unique peaks. The surrounding nature is also a major attraction, and you’ll want to look out for Guanacos and Vicunas, which are llama-like animals native to the region. Happy camping!
5. Ushuaia
The final destination in Patagonia that you’ll want to explore is Ushuaia, also known as the Southernmost city in the world! Here you will find the Beagle Channel and Tierra del Fuego National Park, both of which offer incredible views and some amazing day hikes with easy access from the town. It is a paradise for outdoor adventure lovers, and will offer some much-needed relief from the hot weather if you happen to be in Argentina during their summer months.
6. Mendoza
Found in Argentina’s wine region, this picturesque city offers a smaller and more comfortable city atmosphere with many options for outdoor adventures. Take a biking wine tour of the area’s famous vineyards, or take a day trip out to Aconcagua, the tallest mountain in the Western Hemisphere! There are options for day trips zip lining, canyoning, white water rafting, and a multitude of other activities..
Bonus: Colonia del Sacramento and Montevideo
Check another country off your bucket list and make your way across the Rio de la Plata to Uruguay! It is just a quick ferry ride to Colonia del Sacramento, a lovely, historical town with quaint beaches and incredible restaurants, or Montevideo, the vibrant and relaxed capital of Uruguay. Both of these destinations are easily accessible by ferry from Puerto Madero in Buenos Aires, and will provide a quick break from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Regardless of where you choose to visit, Argentina is an incredible country offering wonderful views and unforgettable experiences no matter where you go.
