Genuine Immersion
Monica wanted to travel to South America for a new experience, to strengthen her Spanish language skills, and to be immersed in a new culture. Did it work?
“I was a 100% immersed on day one. I met my host family and they were so sweet and honest, so instantly welcoming.”
Monica even found the courage to broach the delicate subject of eating Cuy (the South American delicacy of cooked Guinea Pig). She was opposed out of respect for her pet Guinea Pig at home. Their response? A lot of laughs.

Learning How to Say “Yes”
The key to getting the most out of living abroad?
“The answer is always yes. I learned how not to be scared and say yes because you realize that life is short and the greater regret is not taking opportunities.”
Monica went zip-lining, met new friends, and joined a weekend excursion to visit the Tschilas tribal community, which traces its roots back further than the Mayans. Monica’s cultural experience was the real thing – not just another vacation.

Why World Endeavors?
“As well as being affordable, there were reviews from World Endeavors alumni that helped me make my decision. There was also a large range of specific programs in multiple destinations.”
We’ve got to hand it to our alumni who keep inspiring others to make a bold move and engage themselves in a meaningful experience abroad – it helped Monica make that first “yes” decision to go abroad.
Future Plans
Monica is off to visit friends in Scandinavia and the UK — but will return to Ecuador this fall, to start her career as an online content writer.
“Make sure you do it,” she said. “It’s worth the money and it will change you in a positive way.”
