World Endeavors' Thai Studies summer study abroad program in Bangkok, Thailand offers an immersive introduction to Thai culture.  Students spend four weeks living in the heart of bustling Bangkok, taking courses on Thai Buddhism and Thai Society and Culture.  The courses are designed for small groups of students with an emphasis on current issues, an active exchange of ideas, and field trips, including overnight study trips to Chiang Mai and Plai Pong Pang. You will study alongside students from around the world.  Earn academic credit this summer while living in one of the world’s most exciting cities: Bangkok, Thailand! 

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must have completed secondary school, be currently enrolled in a university program, or already hold a university degree (or equivalent)
  • GPA of 2.75

Pre-Departure Information: Before students embark on their trip abroad, they will be provided a pre-departure guide that includes important details about their program abroad. In addition, students may contact World Endeavors any time prior to departure with questions.

Back_topOrientation:

Students will receive an orientation after arriving in Thailand that will acquaint them with the program and the surrounding area. Students will make friends with Thai students, experience the contemporary Thai lifestyle, exchange culture and ideas with locals, learn the Thai language, travel, and have fun.

Back_topHousing:

Housing will be provided in fully furnished shared rooms within a 5-10 minute walk of campus. 

Back_topAcademics:

Instruction
The language of instruction for all courses is English. Experience with the Thai language is not required.

Credit and Transcripts

Each student will take two 3-credit courses, for a total of 6 credits. Academic credit and transcripts will be issued by Thammasat University upon the successful completion of course requirements. It is the student's responsibility to contact their academic advisor prior to attending the summer program to ensure that courses taken while abroad are transferable to their home institution.

Courses: Students will take two courses during the summer program - Buddhism in Thailand and Society and Culture of Thailand.

PD223 Society and Culture of Thailand  3 credits (Lecture 3 hrs/week)     Thai society and culture as investigated in diverse anthropological methods, using case studies from various researches by Thai and international academics, emphasizing analytical and critical approaches.

PD353 Buddhism in Thailand  3 credits (Lecture 3 hrs/week)     An investigation of the role that Buddhist institutions in Thailand today such as sects, organizations of Buddhists, practices as well as the functioning and roles of the various Thai religious institutions in the past.

The program also includes two overnight study trips on the weekends.

Students are never lacking in diversions to enliven their social schedule, pique their intellectual interest and/or complement their studies. The campus houses various cultural and entertainment centers, and numerous social and cultural activities are held throughout the year, including dances, concerts, plays and movies. The city of Bangkok boasts a dazzling array of temples and palaces, as well as a cuisine that is celebrated around the world.  

Activities: As a part of the program, students will participate in two overnight field trips to Plai Pong Pang, located in central Thailand and Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand.
