Community Development and Women's Assistance in Tanzania

Volunteers who have an interest in helping to foster the economic and social welfare of a community will find many meaningful projects in Tanzania.  World Endeavors has partnered with a Tanzanian women's development cooperative to provide volunteers a way to connect directly with local people and make a difference in their community.  Several projects are available, depending on the time of year.

Microloans
The cooperative has started a microloan fund to help members finance their dreams and start small businesses.  Volunteers are needed to raise awareness about the fund and help raise capital for investment in the community.

Animal care
Women in the cooperative have purchased livestock such as pigs and chickens to distribute to local families.  As the animals multiply, they will be donated to member families.  Volunteers can provide assistance in the care of the animals.

Handicrafts and skills training
The women's cooperative offers local women a chance to learn handicrafts such as knitting and crocheting.  The women then band together to make items that they can sell to support their families.  Volunteers who have expertise in handicrafts such as knitting or crochet are needed to come and teach new skills.

Volunteers can also teach other skills, such as leadership and entrepreneurialism, or provide information on other topics such as health care and disease prevention.

Volunteers of both genders are encouraged to participate.

Pre-Departure Information: Before participants embark on their trip, they will be provided a pre-departure guide that includes important details about their program abroad. In addition, students may contact World Endeavors any time prior to departure with questions.

Back_topOrientation:

Upon arrival in Tanzania, volunteers are met at the airport and taken to their housing.  They will receive an orientation that will familiarize them with the local area, Tanzanian culture, and their program.  Afterwards, volunteers travel to their project site where they will be introduced to their host family and their project.  Some more remote project locations have alternate housing, such as shared program housing.

English is widely spoken in Tanzania, but many other languages are also spoken.  While not everyone is fluent in English, it is not necessary that volunteers have any knowledge of any language other than English prior to their placement.

Back_topHousing:

Volunteers stay with local Tanzanian host families whenever possible.  In some more remote volunteer location, alternate housing may be arranged.

Food: Traditional Tanzanian food is included (3 meals per day).

Back_topCost and Dates :

Programs generally start on Monday of each week. Participants can choose when they would like to start and the duration of their volunteer program. A typical program ranges from 4 to 6 weeks. Check with World Endeavors for alternate dates or durations.
