Experience the true meaning of 'cultural immersion' - study in Valladolid, Spain!  World Endeavors' program, Study in Valladolid, gives participants the opportunity for genuine cultural interactions on a daily basis.  Whether you are a beginning Spanish speaker, or a serious language student hoping to expand your fluency, this is the perfect program for you. A rustic and welcoming town in the heart of Spain, Valladolid is sure to provide the means for authentic cultural revelation.

Eligibility: Applicants must be at least 18 years old and in good academic standing.

Pre-Departure Information: Before students embark on their trip abroad, they will be provided a pre-departure handbook that includes important details about their semester abroad.  In addition to the handbook, participants may contact World Endeavors with questions.

Participants will stay with local Spanish host families.  Host families are very welcoming and enjoy having foreign students stay with them.  All host family accommodation includes 3 meals per day and laundry.  Living in a family setting is the best way to practice your Spanish outside of the classroom, and participants frequently make friendships that can last a lifetime.

The program in Valladolid consists of two parts: the "Spanish Studies" semester offered in the fall, and the "Language and Culture" semester offered in the spring. 

The program in Valladolid consists of two parts: the "Spanish Studies" semester offered in the fall, and the "Language and Culture" semester offered in the spring.  Students may enroll in both if they wish to complete a full academic year in Valladolid.  Participants will take a placement test upon arrival in order to be placed in the correct language level.  Previous knowledge of the Spanish language is not required.

SPRING: the "Language and Culture" semester covers subject matter such as: Spanish Grammar, Oral Expression, History of Spain, History of Spanish Art, Literature, Geography, Spanish Culture, the European Union, Textual Analysis, and Spanish for Business.

FALL: the "Spanish Studies" semester covers subject matter such as: Spanish Grammar, Oral Expression and Spanish Culture, and is intended to be an intensive Spanish language session.

While enrolled in the program, World Endeavors participants have the full resources of the University of Valladolid at their disposal, including sport and exercise facilities, libraries, cafeterias, and student societies.

There are many things to do in the town and surrounding areas of Valladolid.  Local festivals occur throughout the year, including Holy Week ("Semana Santa"), Carnival, and Saint's Day celebrations.  There are over 2000 castles and fortresses dotted throughout the region, and Valladolid itself is home to very prestigious museums.  There are also many movie theaters, restaurants, and pubs that participants can explore.

Spain's capital, Madrid, is only a few hours away by bus or train.  Other cities in Spain such as Salamanca, Barcelona, and Valencia are accessible by public transportation, as well.  Valladolid's airport offers affordable flights to such cities as London, Brussels, Barcelona, and Paris.  Participants who are interested in traveling will never be at a loss for their next great destination.

Activities:

The program includes several optional workshops and activities in which students can participate:


  • Saturday excursions: participants travel to local sites of historical or artistic importance.  They will have the opportunity to discuss these sites with their professors.
  • Drama club: participants put on their own plays in Spanish, including costumes and sets.
  • Cinema club: participants watch famous Spanish films and discuss points of interest with their professor
