culinary internships in spain

Spain has exploded onto the international culinary scene in the last decade, and for good reason.  It is home to unbelievably fresh ingredients, varied cultural traditions, and chefs who are pushing the limits of Spanish and international cuisine.  World Endeavors culinary interns are placed in restaurants in the Mediterranean city of Valencia and given the opportunity to work side-by-side with professional chefs. Interns not only learn about Spanish food, but also truly immerse themselves in the local culture.  The internship includes language courses and housing in shared apartments in central Valencia.

Eligibility:

Participants are required to take a written language exam in order to assess the appropriate placement in language classes. A follow-up language interview will be conducted after participants arrive in Spain. Interviews for internship placements take place after arrival in Spain.

A minimum of intermediate Spanish language proficiency is required to complete the program as listed here.  Applicants who are beginning Spanish speakers may participate by adding extra weeks of language training on to the program.  The cost of additional weeks of language training is not included.

Pre-Departure Information: Before participants embark, they will be provided a pre-departure guide that includes important details about their internship abroad. In addition, participants may contact World Endeavors any time prior to departure with questions.

Back_topOrientation:

After arriving in Valencia, participants will be given a welcome orientation at the Spanish language academy. Our director of intern programs in Spain will be available to provide support and answer questions throughout the duration of the internship.

Back_topHousing:

Housing is provided. Shared apartments with Spanish students or young Spanish professionals.

Housing is typically located in the center of the city. Participants live in a shared apartment with other international students, Spanish students and young Spanish professionals. Participants will have access to kitchen and bathroom facilities.

Apartments are not furnished with household linen, towels, or blankets. All apartments have access to a washing machine for laundry, hot water, a kitchen, and living room.
A home stay with a Spanish family is also available for an additional cost. Participants interested in this option should inquire with World Endeavors to estimate additional costs.

Back_topParticipant Life:

Participants will find ample opportunities to experience the authentic Spanish life throughout their experience in Valencia. Valencia is the birthplace of paella, a delectable combination of seafood and rice, and there's nothing like relaxing at a sidewalk cafe with a fresh cafe con leche.  The river Turia, which used to flow through the heart of Valencia, was diverted in the 1950's and the graceful bridges which used to span it now reside in a sunny municipal park. Valencia is also famous for its wide Mediterranean white-sand beaches.  Valencia is the site of the historic battles of El Cid, Spain's national hero, who fought against the invading Moors, and many festivals in the city and surrounding villages celebrate him. Valencia is a city both ancient and new, and participants will have the opportunity to experience this amazing culture first-hand.

Activities: Optional weekend excursions are also available for groups or individual students and interns to places like Cordoba, Granada, Ronda or even Morocco.

Back_topConsiderations:

Due to cultural considerations, it is very difficult to secure an internship placement during the month of August.  World Endeavors encourages applicants to schedule their trips accordingly.  Applicants will be able to continue language classes during the month of August; however, internships will not likely be available during this month.
Spanish language proficiency is determined by a placement test.  Beginners in the language, as determined by our staff, should plan to take more than 2 weeks of Spanish language training.
