Summer study abroad in Northern Ireland

Spend this summer studying in the diverse and beautiful city of Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland!  This three week program offers students the chance to take interdisciplinary courses on Irish history, culture, literature, and politics through the Institute of Irish Studies at the historic Queen’s University of Belfast.  Gain a richer and deeper understanding of Irish culture, all while experiencing daily life in one of Europe’s most fascinating cities.

The Queen’s University campus is located near what is called the “Golden Mile” on the picturesque south side of Belfast.  Young people and students frequent the area for the popular restaurants, pubs, shops, and cinemas to fill their free time.  Participants in this program will also have the unique opportunity to meet with representatives of Northern Ireland’s political parties to learn more about the region’s tumultuous history and current political issues.

Join World Endeavors this summer for an unforgettable Irish experience!

Eligibility: Students must be 18 or older and have successfully completed their first year of college study.  A GPA of 2.5 and a professor recommendation are also required for this program.

Back_topOrientation:

Students will be picked up at the airport upon arrival and will receive an on-campus orientation.  The orientation is designed to make visiting students feel at home and get settled in before classes begin.

Back_topHousing:

Single, furnished self-catered accommodations provided.  Students will have access to kitchen facilities to prepare meals, and there are also many nearby restaurants and cafes.

Preference is given to international students in the allocation of University accommodation and students applying in time are likely to be accommodated in a University residence hall. All University housing is within walking distance of the main campus.

Instruction
The academic year is divided into two semesters, and runs from late September until mid-June. Courses are offered on a semester basis

Course Credits
Students are normally required to take three courses (called modules) in each semester, a total of six for the year, in order to have a full academic course load. Alternative assessment can be arranged for students who must leave before Christmas, thereby missing the January examination period.

Transcripts of all assessed work are issued to the student's home college at the end of the Study Abroad period. The entry level required is normally 3.0 GPA.

Back_topParticipant Life:

The campus is located on the attractive south side of the city of Belfast. One of the city's best known thoroughfares is the so-called 'Golden Mile'. This area, right beside the campus, is packed with restaurants, bars, cafes, clubs and cinemas, and is popular with students and young people throughout the year.

Activities: Students will have the opportunity to travel to the historical city of Derry where they will visit the Tower Museum, the Museum of Free Derry and a tour of the murals and city walls.  Students will also visit historical and cultural sites like the Stormont Parliament Buildings and Clifton Street Cemetery.   Belfast is also conveniently located for independent travel, with many destinations within Northern Ireland and Ireland accessible for day and weekend trips.
