This year, travel to Cuernavaca, Mexico, the "City of Eternal Spring" to enroll in intensive Spanish classes while immersing yourself in Mexican culture. World Endeavors' study abroad program in Mexico offers you the unique opportunity to get to know this colorful and complex country first-hand. During the day you will improve your Spanish through intensive grammar, speaking, conversation, and Latin American history and culture classes, and at night you'll get practical experience speaking Spanish while hanging out with your Mexican host family. You'll even get a chance to connect with local Mexican students through our 'amigo' language exchange program. Eligibility:
Students must be 18 or older at the time of the program. No previous experience with the Spanish language is required.
Pre-Departure Information:
Before students embark, they will be provided a pre-departure handbook that includes important details about their program abroad. In addition, students may contact World Endeavors any time prior to departure with questions.
Orientation:
Students will participate in an orientation session after their arrival in Mexico. Orientation includes a welcome, a tour of the language study facilities, a Spanish placement test, information about housing Cuernavaca, and your classes, as well as a tour of the city in the afternoon.
Housing:
Participants will stay with local Mexican host families. Host families are very welcoming and enjoy having foreign students stay with them. All host family accommodation includes 3 meals per day. Living in a host family setting is the best way to practice your Spanish outside of the classroom, and participants frequently make friendships that can last a lifetime. Academics:
Each week of instruction includes 15 hours of language study. Students can earn up to 18 credits per semester.* *Credit transfer is at the discretion of your home institution. To ensure proper transfer of credits, students should meet with their academic advisors prior to traveling to Mexico. Classes run from Monday to Friday from 8 am to 2 pm. Each day includes 3 hours of Spanish classes, 2 hours of Latin American history and culture or grammar, and 1 hour of cultural lectures or conversation. Students also have the opportunity to take additional enrichment classes in the afternoons at no extra cost. Topics include: extra help with pronunciation, grammar, or advanced conversation. Students may request additional help from experienced tutors for areas of personal interest (1 session per week). Our study abroad program in Cuernavaca has one of the highest standards of teaching anywhere in Mexico! Our combination of quality instruction and friendly teachers means you are sure to increase your Spanish level at a rate you wouldn't have believed possible. Please note that this is an intensive language study semester program; general electives in the humanities or other disciplines (ex. History, Literature) are not available.
Activities:
This program includes 2 exciting all-day excursions! Teotihuacan pyramids Participants can partake in an informative guided trip to nearby ancient sites, featuring the pyramids dedicated to the sun and the moon. Museum trip Another excursion includes a day trip to Mexico City to visit a museum featuring the works of famous Mexican artists, including Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. In addition to the scheduled excursions, students who want to get out and experience real Mexican culture have a wide variety of things to do and see. Cuernavaca is home to many interesting and historic sites, such as castles and cathedrals, some of which date back to the 1500s. Other fun activities include: local museums, hot springs, open-air markets, festivals, and side trips to nearby towns. Mexico City is only a short bus ride away. This beautiful colonial town has something to offer everyone.
