summer study abroad in florence italy
Study abroad in Florence, Italy this summer! Spend four weeks taking intensive Italian classes in the heart of Florence - a city known as the birthplace of the Renaissance. Florence’s combination of history and dynamic modern culture make it the ideal city for students to immerse themselves in the Italian way of life. Study Italian language with students from around the world during the week, and explore the region of Tuscany on the weekends through school-sponsored activities or independent travel.
Eligibility:
Students must be 18 years or older and have completed high school at the time of the course. No previous experience with the Italian language is required.
Pre-Departure Information:
Before students embark, they will be provided a pre-departure handbook that includes important details about their summer program abroad. In addition, students may contact World Endeavors any time prior to departure with questions.
Orientation:
Upon arrival in Florence, students participate in an orientation session which will familiarize them with the program, the city of Florence, and Italian culture in general.
Housing:
Shared student apartment housing is included. All apartments are fully furnished and have all kitchen utensils necessary for cooking. The cost of utilities is not included. Students will share apartments with other study abroad participants, language study students, and local Italians. Living in an apartment in Italy is a great way to experience local culture and get to know the city of Florence on a personal, daily level. Single rooms are available for an additional fee upon request.
Academics:
The four week summer program is an intensive Italian immersion program. Students will study under Italian professors in small classes ranging from 8-25 students, which allow the faculty to interact with students individually. Courses are Monday through Friday for 4 hours a day. The program also includes an additional 20 hours outside of the classroom with optional weekly field trips to local sites, seminars, and Italian language labs. Participants who successfully complete the 4 week course will receive 6 academic credits. The student will receive a transcript from a fully-accredited US university.
Participant Life:
Many people believe that the best way to study in Italy is to study in a place that allows for direct daily contact with Italian communities. World Endeavors' Study in Italy program was developed to provide students more experience with local communities and authentic Italian culture. At least once a week, an optional cultural or social activity is organized for the students. These activities give students exposure to Italian culture and an opportunity to practice their Italian language skills. Examples include: free concerts at the school, Italian music listening workshops, conferences on subjects such as art, literature, Opera, or politics, Italian cinema screenings, and guided Art History tours around the city of Florence. These activities are free to students enrolled in the program.
