summer study abroad program in irish studies


Spend your summer studying Irish culture in the beautiful coastal city of Limerick, Ireland.  World Endeavors is proud to offer a unique program that provides insight on Irish life while placing students in the heart of the land of Eire.  Students with or without Irish heritage who have an interest in cultural studies can choose from courses in Politics, History, and even Media Studies.  What's more, Limerick is the perfect base from which to explore the rest of the island and even continental Europe.  Join World Endeavors in Limerick this summer and make Ireland a part of your life forever after.

Eligibility: Students must be 18 or older and have successfully completed their first year of college study.  A GPA of 2.5 and a professor recommendation are also required for this program.

Pre-Departure Information: Before students embark on their trip abroad, they will be provided a pre-departure handbook that includes important details about their semester abroad.  In addition to the handbook, students may contact World Endeavors any time prior to departure with questions or concerns.

Back_topOrientation:

Students will be picked up at the airport upon arrival and will receive an on-campus orientation.  Orientation is a great time to ask questions about your program as well as get to know the other students you will be living with.

Back_topHousing:

Participants will stay in on-campus housing at the University of Limerick.  Students will have a single bedroom in a shared student apartment.  Apartments include a shared living area, kitchen, and lounge with a television.

2 meals per day (lunchand dinner) are also provided with the program.

Back_topAcademics:

Students study one course on a full-time basis for the three week session.   Each class is worth 3 credits.  Participants may choose 1 course from the list of 5 available courses for their session.  Please note that all courses are taught at the '300' (3rd year) level.

Sociological Perspectives on Irish Society
Screening Ireland: Ireland in Film and Television

Students who successfully complete the course will receive a transcript from the University of Limerick, a fully-accredited Irish University.  It is the student's responsibility to contact their academic advisor prior to the program to determine how the courses taken while abroad will transfer to their home institution.

Activities:

The summer program in Irish Studies includes 2 exciting all-day guided excursions!  These activities are provided so students can see more of the country and gain a deeper understanding of Irish culture and history.  Preliminary excursions planned for 2009 include:

Trip to County Clare coast
Trip to Dublin

Students will also have the opportunity to use the University's excellent indoor and outdoor sporting facilities in their spare time.
