teaching children in india
Volunteers help shape young lives in India by sharing their English skills and teaching talents. They teach English and many other subjects to elementary school children from 4-12 years of age. Native or fluent English speakers with or without formal teaching experience can contribute greatly to a child's educational development. Volunteers are encouraged to use tools such as music, sports, dancing, or drama to teach the children in a fun and dynamic way. Volunteers may also have the opportunity to teach adults or to teach children in non-traditional settings.
Orientation:
Language and Culture Orientation After being received at the airport, an orientation is provided that familiarizes participants with the basics of the culture, etiquette and ethics of India. The course includes an overview of the history, arts, food and culture of India. Traditions and social behavior of Indian families are also discussed.
After orientation, participants are taken to their accommodations and projects where they will begin their volunteer placement. Traditional Indian food is included twice a day, in the morning and the evening.
Housing:
Some placements are residential which means that the volunteer will stay at the local school or orphanage or in staff housing at a national park.
Many other volunteers will stay in volunteer housing in a residential neighborhood. The volunteer housing is comfortable, consisting of an apartment-style setting with individual bedrooms off of a shared living area. Volunteers have access to kitchen facilities and modern (Western-style) bathrooms.
Food:
Traditional Indian food is included in the mornings and evenings each day.
Volunteers will be provided with food and will have kitchen facilities available to do their own cooking.
Participant Life:
Volunteering in India is both challenging and rewarding. Initial culture shock is a common phenomenon, yet most participants find that making friends in India is quite easy. During the busy season (June-August) participants may be placed in close proximity to other volunteers. There is free time on the weekends for traveling and exploring the area.
Volunteers are not required to be fluent in any of the Indian languages as English is the Lingua Franca of India. It is widely spoken and understood by most Indians. This will be useful to volunteers when interacting with people in the local community. However, making an effort to learn even a few phrases of the local language(s) is greatly appreciated and is sure to come in handy.
