environmental conservation in india
India is known for its amazing environmental diversity. Yet, throughout the country growing populations are overstraining natural resources. Problems such as loss of bio-diversity, deforestation, desertification, over-grazing, and air and water pollution are significant. Environmental conservation projects address these issues directly through community education and collaboration as well as hands-on conservation work such as planting and research.
Orientation:
Language and Culture Orientation After being received at the airport, an orientation is provided that familiarizes participants with the basics of the culture, etiquette and ethics of India. The course includes an overview of the history, arts, food and culture of India. Traditions and social behavior of Indian families are also discussed.
After orientation, participants are taken to their accommodations and projects where they will begin their volunteer placement. Traditional Indian food is available twice a day, in the morning and the evening.
Housing:
Most placements are residential which means that the volunteer will stay at the local school or orphanage or in staff housing at a national park.
Food:
Traditional Indian food is provided in the mornings and evenings each day.
Participant Life:
Volunteering in India is both challenging and rewarding. Initial culture shock is a common phenomenon, yet most participants find that making friends in India is quite easy. Volunteers who sign up for the Environmental Conservation program should be prepared for total cultural immersion. There is free time on the weekends for traveling and exploring the area.
Volunteers are not required to be fluent in any of the Indian languages as English is the Lingua Franca of India. It is widely spoken and understood by many Indians. This will be useful to volunteers when interacting with people in the local community. However, making an effort to learn even a few phrases of the local language(s) is greatly appreciated and is sure to come in handy.
Considerations:
The Environmental Conservation in India program in particular is very geographically remote. Volunteers should be prepared for total cultural immersion. Many of the areas where volunteers are placed do not have electricity or a reliable source of fresh water. Volunteers are greatly needed; however, this placement is not suitable for everyone. Volunteers should carefully consider their ability to live in rustic accommodations and deal with culture shock.
