teaching in guatemala
Join World Endeavors in the rural communities of Guatemala to help improve the education of local teenagers and children. Make a difference in a child's life by volunteering your time and expertise in a variety of subjects. Volunteers may act as classroom assistants or as independent teachers, depending on their comfort level and local need. Multiple opportunities in teaching are available: volunteers can teach English, a valuable skills that provides economic opportunity and growth potential to Guatemala's impoverished communities. Previous experience in teaching or knowledge of the Spanish language is not necessary for English teaching placements. Volunteers with some Spanish proficiency also have the choice to teach an alternate subject, such as science, math, history, art, music, sports, or many others. A thorough knowledge of the subject matter is required for this option.
Eligibility:
No Spanish skills are required to teach English. Volunteers who wish to teach a subject of their choice (examples: science, math, history, art) should have a minimum of intermediate Spanish proficiency. A minimum 6 week commitment is required for the teaching program.
Orientation:
Upon arrival in Guatemala, participants are met at the airport and given transportation to their volunteering location. They will receive an orientation that will familiarize them with the town and the surrounding area, Guatemalan culture, and their program.
Housing:
Participants will stay with local Guatemalan host families. Host families are very welcoming and enjoy having visitors stay with them. All host family accommodation includes 3 meals per day. Living in a host family setting is the best way to practice your Spanish, and participants frequently make friendships that can last a lifetime.
Food:
All meals with the host family (3 per day) are included.
Activities:
Up to 4 weeks of Spanish language training are included with a volunteer program of any length. For example, a 6 week program would include 4 weeks of language training, a 4 week program would include 4 weeks of language training, and a 2 week program would include 2 weeks of language training. Participants have the option to study Spanish for up to 5 hours, 5 days per week, for the first 4 weeks of their program.

Programs generally start on Monday of each week. Participants can choose when they would like to start and the duration of their volunteer program. A typical program ranges from 4 to 6 weeks. Check with World Endeavors for alternate dates or durations. Please note that schools in Guatemala are usually on break from mid-October to early January. Teaching placements are generally not available during that time. We encourage volunteers to apply as far in advance as possible. Generally it is best to submit your application at least 12 weeks prior to your intended start date, but exceptions can be made if the volunteer is willing to work with World Endeavors to expedite the enrollment process. To submit an application, download the application form found on the sidebar of this page, or click on 'apply' at the top of this page to apply online.
