Join World Endeavors this summer in the village of Ormskirk, England, for a true British experience! Our 4 week program will allow you to get a taste of authentic British life while furthering your studies, making new friends, and learning to avoid cars that drive on the left side of the road. Choose from classes in International Studies, Literature, Creative Writing, Film Studies, and History. Participants receive a transcript from a fully-accredited US university. Eligibility:
Students must be at least 18 years old, in good academic standing, and have been previously enrolled in a college or university.
Pre-Departure Information:
Before students embark, they will be provided a pre-departure handbook that includes important details about their program abroad. In addition, students may contact World Endeavors any time prior to departure with questions.
Housing:
Single university accommodation is provided. During the excursion to London, shared hotel accommodations are included.
Academics:
Course offerings change each year. The courses below are offered for the summer program of 2008. Check with World Endeavors for updated course information. All courses are worth 3 US credits; students may take up to 2 courses. IS 305 - International Studies on British Cultural Identities Examine current issues being faced by Britons and explore the impacts of devolution and of the European Union. EH 378 - British Writers of the North: Beatles to Burns From Spenser to Scott, so much literature of the British Isles is transformed by the intimate relationship that the writers had with the places and objects (and the history of these places and objects) of the English countryside. We will explore the British landscape to experience it as the great writers experienced it through the centuries. EH 414 - London Today! This course is designed to both study and experience one of the largest, most multicultural, and most exciting cities in the world - London! The course includes several days actually living in the heart of London. The course also includes a full day walking tour, guided personally by the professor; however, any of your other course excursions or optional activities in the city are also part of the course. Whether you're watching the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace or seeing a play at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre (both the monarchy and Shakespeare are very much a part of modern London) or riding the famed Millenium Eye ferris wheel high above the Thames or even just strolling through the beautiful residential squares of Bloomsbury, London has something to offer everyone. FVA 476 - Shakespeare on the Screen This is a film course exploring ideas on film adaptation, particularly Shakespeare plays adapted to the screen. The students will have the opportunity to watch films and plays while reading, discussing, and working on production activities relating to film adaptation, Shakespeare on the screen, and Shakespeare Theater. EH 306 - Creative Writing Short stories, poetry, drama and creative non-fiction. Students will keep journals as the springboard into fiction, plays, screenplays, and/or poetry in various genres.
Participant Life:
Students in this program will have the unique opportunity to see many different areas of England. The program begins in the small town of Ormskirk, near the urban centers of Liverpool and Manchester. Music fans may know that Liverpool was home to the Beatles and is currently host to a Beatles museum. The Lakes District, Scotland, and Ireland are also close by. The program ends with a 5 day excursion to London, the heart of British economic and cultural life.
