deaf education in ecuador
Volunteers work in a local school specializing in deaf education, assisting teachers in the classroom, working one on one with students, helping to lead a variety of activities, and generally providing support for the students. This program offers a unique opportunity for those with sign language experience to put their skills into practice, learn Ecuadorian sign language, and make lasting connections with young, eager students.
Eligibility:
Volunteers must have: • A desire to help the people of Ecuador • Flexibility • Self-motivation • An openness to a new culture and a willingness to learn
Pre-Departure Information:
Before participants embark, they will be provided a pre-departure guide that includes important details about their experience abroad. In addition to the guide, participants may contact World Endeavors any time prior to departure with questions.

Upon arrival in Ecuador, volunteers receive an orientation that will familiarize them with the city of Guayaquil and the surrounding area, the Ecuadorian culture, and the volunteer program. All volunteer placements of one month or longer include 2 weeks of Spanish language classes. Class sizes are typically very small, giving students a personalized learning experience.

Participants stay with local Ecuadorian families in shared and single room accommodations or in volunteer housing. Accommodations are safe, clean, modest, and comfortable and provide easy access to public transportation.
